Colourist at a grading console facing a cinema screen

About Jorge Ortiz Yus — Senior Colourist

I grew up surrounded by images and sound. Sunday mornings meant exploring my father’s record collection and discovering Kraftwerk. I would also borrow his Yashica to photograph my younger siblings, watching and waiting to see what a moment might become in a picture.

I studied audiovisual media while working in a photo lab and as a sound technician at a local radio station. Images became my profession; music has remained a constant in my life.

My career as a colourist began in the days of film. I worked with Cintel telecines and Kodak and Fuji negatives, then experienced the move to digital cinema from inside the grading suite. Nearly thirty years on, I still love the blend of intuition and precision the work calls for.

I have graded feature films, television series and commercials, from early RED One productions to films finished for cinema, television and HDR. Every project begins with a conversation about the cinematography and the story. From there, my job is to develop a visual direction and carry it through the film, shot by shot.

Recent work includes La bola negra, graded at Moonlight Barcelona. My work on Familiar received the Best Color Grading award at War of Films.

I now work independently with directors, cinematographers and post-production teams. What still excites me is seeing a film find its visual identity, and knowing I’ve helped it get there.
